'Tis the season... for payment fraud. 

Higher transaction volumes and more employees on vacation make it easier for scammers to target your business. Here’s how to protect yourself and your business from some of the most common seasonal scams.

Protect your accounts

  1. Make sure you sign in to the legitimate Online Banking for Business platform
  • Never use a search engine to find and access Online Banking for Business. We suggest bookmarking www21.bmo.com for quick and secure access.
  • Alternatively, visit BMO’s main site, www.bmo.com. Select SIGN IN, then choose Online Banking for Business from the menu.
  • Install Trusteer Rapport, a free app that ensures you’re accessing secure BMO websites. You can download the software by selecting the Trusteer logo at the bottom of the Online Banking for Business Sign In page.
     
  1. Make sure you’ve completed your 2-step verification set up. This acts as an added layer of protection that helps keep your account safe from online fraud attempts. Learn more about 2-step verification
     
  2. Be aware of red flags. Watch out for unprompted or unexpected requests to verify your identity with 2-step verification. Here’s when we'll ask you to use 2-step verification
     
  3. Taking time off over the holidays? Make sure all team members are set up with their own 2-step verification method and have the appropriate service entitlements and payment limits set up.
     
  4. Always validate payment requests or information change requests that arrive via email, fax or text with a direct phone call or cameras-on virtual meeting using a trusted contact number.


Report fraud

BMO will never contact you via phone call, email or text asking for your verification code (including one-time passcode), user ID, password, PIN or security questions. If you're unsure about a request or suspect you've been a victim of fraud, please contact your BMO representative or email us at phishing@bmo.com
