What is a “Pain” file?

A Payment Initiation (or “Pain”) file is used for payment instructions in the ISO 20022 format. In our Comprehensive Payables service, we use 3 types:

File Type  What is it used for?  Role of the file originator
Pain.001.001.03
(known as “Pain.001”)
Credit transactions  Debtor

Pain.008.001.02
(known as “Pain.008”)

Debit transactions  Creditor

Pain.002.001.03

(known as “Pain.002”)

Confirms receipt of your files and provides status updates for both credit and debit transactions. For easy reconciliation, this file also includes the original payment instructions.  BMO as Debtor Agent (Pain.001 files) or Creditor Agent (Pain.008 files)

The structure of Pain file has levels and tags nested inside. This makes it easier to find specific payment information. Please remember that every tag value with information needs to have the opening and closing tag on the same line.
