How do I trace an EFT payment?

You can trace any EFT payments that have settled within the last 95 calendar days to see the real-time status details. Here’s how:

  1. In Online Banking for Business, select the Payments & Receivables tab.
  2. Under "Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT)", select Manage Payments.
  3. Find the payments file with the payment you want to trace. Select the Number of Payments link.
  4. Next to the payment you want to trace, select Actions.
  5. Choose Trace.
Note: A standard fee applies to each trace
In the “Trace Payment” window, you’ll see the current status of your payment and a detailed history. To print your trace or save it as a PDF, select the Print button.

To make reconciling incoming payments easier, you can view the EFT cross-reference number in your Account Information - Detail Report and Account Information - Reconciliation Report. The cross-reference number uses the existing Customer Reference field in EFT payment files. Where to find your EFT file reports

If you want to investigate a completed payment further, you can request a manual trace. Simply select the Manual Trace button and follow the instructions. If you're unable to request a trace online, complete and fax us this BMO Trace Request Form.

Note: A standard fee applies to each manual trace.
