How can I check if I have a 32-bit or 64-bit Windows system?

Many software packages are available in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions. To pick the right one for your system, you need to know if you have a 32-bit or 64-bit copy of Windows. Here are some easy ways to check:

Windows 10
Windows 8 or 8.1
Windows 7 or Vista

 

Windows 10

  1. Right-click on the Start button.
  2. From the list, select System.
  3. Under "System Type", it will show you if you're running a 32-bit or 64-bit operating system.
     

Windows 8 or 8.1

  1. Right-click the Start button or lower left corner of the desktop.   
  2. From the list, select System.
  3. Under "System Type", it will show you if you're running a 32-bit or 64-bit operating system.
     

Windows 7 or Vista 

  1. Select the Start button.
  2. Towards the right of the start menu, click Control Panel.
  3. Select System.
  4. Under "System Type", it will show you if you're running a 32-bit or 64-bit operating system.
